She wears red and loves polka dots, just like me. And these days, Minnie Mouse is the muse of fashion designers. Last year, Christian Louboutin designed a pair of shoes that the ravishing rodent surely inspired. OPI recently based a nail polish collection around her dazzling tastes. Minnie will be on the runway during London’s Fashion Week in mid-September and afterward, her outfits will be auctioned off on eBay to support the BFC/Bazaar Fashion Arts Foundation.
On the other side of the pond, Minnie and her stylish side-kick Mickey will be featured in the Barney’s Christmas window display. “Electric Holiday” will use a 3-D light display to show the twosome and their friends in outfits modeled after some of the greatest French fashion designers, such as Lanvin and Balmain. (Mind you, they’ve seriously slimmed down the entire crew. No pulpeuses models here!) The whole thing will be set to music by Oscar winner Michael Giacchino, who composed the score for the Disney film Up. If you are as enchanted as event organizers think you will be, you will be able to buy figurines of Mickey and Minnie in their stylish threads, a portion of the proceeds of which will be donated to charity.
Today’s expression, quand le chat n’est pas là les souris dansent (kohn luh shah neh pah lah lay souree dahnse), means “when the cat isn’t there the mice dance.” There’ll be plenty of dancing by some well dressed mice over the next few months. I’ll leave my cats at home when I go to New York to check them out.
